About the Takedown Request

Firstly, if I violate the rights of major music publishers, the takedown request should be sent by them instead of the Musescore developers.

Secondly, musescore.com is not a simple music sharing website. The authors of sheet music must transcript and rearrange the original songs to sheets, not just copying files from somewhere else to musescore.com. As a result, the licensing should focus on the rights of transcription/rearranging to the sheet music authors, instead of the rights of sharing the music on some websites.

Thirdly, the copyright ownership of contents on musescore.com is not clear. Not every non-public-domain song on musescore.com is owned by major music publishers. There are many small music publishers and independent songwriters; Songs might be licensed under free licenses like Creative Commons. Also, there are many authors who created their own songs and posted the sheet music on musescore.com. Does musescore.com pay to those authors?

If we can’t see proof that musescore.com really pays license fees to the copyright owners, we may think it is just an excuse to get profit from stealing.

Also, I’m developing webmscore. It could convert a mscz file into any format that the Musescore software supports, and in the browser. Because the Musescore software is open source under GPL, I could translate the source code to js, or compile it into asm.js/WASM.

Highlights

Complete redesign of the Palettes panel

Palettes panel is one of the most commonly used UI elements in the editor. By the way, there are a lot of reports from users who don’t understand how to customize palette cells, how to add custom elements and rearrange existing palettes.

In a collaboration with @Tantacrul, we focused on simplifying the interaction with the palette elements and ease of customization. We made the interactions more intuitive and integrated the semantic of Master Palette to the palette panel.

Check out Beta version and let us know what you think can be improved!

Chord Symbol Formatting

Past releases of MuseScore have supported superscripting and within chord symbols, but only when using the Jazz style and the corresponding MuseJazz font, and only the fixed amount built into the font. With MuseScore 3.3, you can now set superscripting options within Format / Style / Chord Symbols, whether using the Jazz style or not. There are separate controls for the size and position of extensions and modifiers (the «7» and «b9» respectively in «C7b9»).

Roman Numeral Analysis

MuseScore 3.3 adds native support for Roman numeral analysis (RNA) through a new command, font, and style settings. To add RNA to your score, select a note or rest and use Add / Text / Roman Numeral Analysis (or define a shortcut for this command). You can then type your analysis using ordinary characters, like «IV64», and it will be rendered with appropriate formatting using the new Campania font and the Roman Numeral Analysis text style settings. You can then use Space or any of the other shortcuts used when entering chord symbols to enter additional analysis on other notes.

Nashville Number System

MuseScore 3.3 adds native support for Nashville notation through a new command and style settings. To add Nashville notation to your score, select a note or rest and use Add / Text / Nashville Number (or define a shortcut for this command). You can then type your notation using ordinary characters, like «4m7/6», and it will be rendered using formatting similar to that used for chord symbols and the Nashville Number text style settings. You can then use Space or any of the other shortcuts used when entering chord symbols to enter additional notation on other notes.

In breve

(Tuttavia, alcuni mesi fa, era possibile scaricare gratuitamente.)

Inoltre, sto sviluppando webmscore.

New features

Improving MuseScore’s playback out of the box is an important and ongoing process. There are many aspects involved in making MuseScore more expressive, but fundamental to this are solid samples and a great default .

Listening to the community we have identified the highest priority areas for improvement and have for the very first time with MuseScore 2.2.1, engaged a professional virtual instrument developer ( S. Christian Collins, creator of GeneralUser GS) tasked with continually improving the default soundfont during the remainder year.

Reflecting the started of this new initiative, we have re-christened the default as MuseScore_General. Highlights of improvements so far include updated sounds for piano, clarinet, and synthesizers. As MuseScore development continues, so will Chris’ work on MuseScore_General. You can follow the progress and add your insights in the dedicated SoundFont forum.

Enabling MuseScore to play through a MIDI keyboard or redirect MIDI output to a DAW or VST is among the most popular questions in our forums. To date the answer has always been to connect via JACK MIDI. This solution provides a wide range possibilities, especially on Linux… when it actually works. But for Windows and Mac users it is complicated to set up and not so easy to use.

In MuseScore 2.2.1, JACK is no longer required, and MuseScore can communicate directly a MIDI device or virtual instrument — no additional installation, plugin, or setup required (thanks to Eric Fontaine). You can read more about this exciting new feature here: https://musescore.org/en/node/208986

Also included in MuseScore 2.2.1 are 200+ improvements and bug fixes, including MusicXML 3.1 import/export, improved support for various other file formats, three new localizations (Armenian, Igbo, and Kabyle), as well as updated translations for all languages.

Check out the MuseScore 2.2 Release Notes for the complete list of all new features and fixed bugs.

Though MuseScore 2.2.1 is almost fully compatible with the 2.x series in both directions, there are a few rare exceptions where scores may be rendered slightly differently in the different versions of MuseScore. Detailed description such exceptions may be found .

Highlights

There are a few major features which are requested all the time, e.g. the first user request for single-note dynamics was in 2010!

Single-note Dynamics

MuseScore will now play, out of the box, crescendos, and diminuendos on single notes; fortepianos and other dynamics with changing volumes; and dynamic articulations. Before, separate notes would only play at a single dynamic for their entire duration.

This is thanks to an update to the MuseScore General soundfont and a significant amount of programming that allows dynamics playback to be controlled while a note is still being played. This isn’t just volume – timbre, and other subtle effects change based on the dynamics.

One of the things that was prioritized when developing this was the correct importing of older scores. All older scores should be imported in such a way that they play with these new features enabled, without any action needed from the user. Of course, if something isn’t working as you think it should, please submit an issue in the issue tracker.

A high-quality soundfont is available as an extension in the Resource Manager.

Special thanks to @jthistle (James Thistlewood) and S. Christian Collins

Single-note Dynamics Customization Options

The new dynamics method is powerful enough to allow you to customize how playback sounds while being simple enough for it to work without any customization.

For hairpins, there is a choice between how the dynamics are interpolated:

  • Linear (the default). Dynamics change at a constant rate.
  • Ease-in, ease-out or ease-in and out. Dynamics will change slowly at first (ease-in), or change slowly when they come to the end of the hairpin (ease-out), or do both (ease-in and out).
  • Exponential. Dynamics will start off changing very slowly but will grow very quickly towards the end of the change.

Linearization Feature

Users often take advantage of jumps and repeats during «prototyping» of a song and, after a while, decide to linearize the score before continuing with the arrangement. This is especially common in larger arrangements, where structural parts (Verses, Choruses, etc) are seldom repeated exactly. MuseScore 3.1 now provides the Tools > Unroll Repeats command to automate this process.

Special thanks to @velochy (Margus Niitsoo)

Half/Double Duration

MuseScore 3.1 includes new commands Edit > Paste Half Duration and Edit > Paste Double Duration to halve or double rhythms when pasting a selection. These allow you to quickly turn a passage notated in eighth notes into one notated in sixteenths or vice versa. Unlike earlier plugins, these commands work on tuplets and multiple voices.

Special thanks to @MarcSabatella (Marc Sabatella)

UX improvements

We carefully listen to the feedback and especially the feedback from a professional musician and designer Martin Keary.

We implemented a few things that make the user experience smoother:

  • Selecting notes after deleting various elements
  • Copying hairpins and adjusted dynamics
  • Clearing target measures on copy-pasting elements

We appreciate the critical feedback and going to implement more suggestions in the final MuseScore 3.1 release.

Special thanks to @tantacul (Martin Keary) and @dmitrio95 (Dmitri Ovodok)

What’s Next?

Even as we’ve been preparing the MuseScore 2.2.1 release, we’re still hard at work on the next major version of MuseScore.

We’re looking for more developers to join the community as part of the MuseScore development effort.

As MuseScore is free and open source, anyone can get the source and share code contributions on GitHub. And of course, non-programmer MuseScore users can also contribute—we welcome your feedback on the MuseScore forums, and you can always make a donation to support the future of MuseScore. But above all, you can help MuseScore most by spreading the word and sharing MuseScore with your friends and family!

About

Musescore Pro ($6.99/mo) is required to download sheet music from musescore.com recently.
(However, a few months ago, it was free to download.)

The Musescore company said that this is about copyright and licensing, and they must pay the copyright owners.

Many kinds of music on musescore.com are already in the Public Domain, which means either the author posted them in Public Domain, or the author has been dead for over 70 years.
Do they need to pay those composers who died hundreds of years ago?Update: sheets in Public Domain are able to be downloaded without Musescore Pro now, but we still need an account to access them.

This is absolutely not acceptable, and the only purpose is to profit from stealing.
