Freeplane

Freeplane is another Java based mind mapping software, which can be run on any Operating system (Windows, Mac, and Linux) with the required version of Java installed. Its an open source mindmap program and is absolutely free to use.

It packs a bunch of features which you can use to make creative, informative, and simplified mindmaps. You are free to work on multiple ideas at a time in different tabs, and can create encrypted mind maps as well. When you begin with a mindmap, you an select to work with any of the 4 mindmap templates offered: Standard, BigMap, ConceptMap, or Essay.

Start wring down your ideas or plans with a Parent node. Build your ideas by inserting Child nodes and Sibling nodes using the assigned shortcuts. You can add Child nodes to a Child node without any limit. To insert a Child node under a node, press Insert shortcut key, and to add a Sibling node to a Child node, press Enter shortcut key. Nodes can be modified easily by accessing a list of tools when you right click on a node. The options available let you Edit node core, Edit node details, Minimize node, Add image to node, Set a free positioned node, Add/Remove cloud around a node, Apply styles, Link nodes, Encrypt node, Copy node, etc.

If a node has multiple Child nodes, you can easily contract/expand them when required. A node can be encrypted separately as well.

Various navigation options have been provided along with shortcuts, which will help you to easily jump from a node to another using keyboard. Another good feature provided is the Filter, using which you can select, compose, highlight, etc. the filtered nodes.

A Time Manager with Reminders is a bonus feature which you can make use of. Scripts can be added and executed here. Hot keys for certain functions can be defined manually, which gives you ease of use.

If you want to save your mind map, then you can do so in .mm format. Export and Print map options are available. A map can be exported in the following formats: .adoc, .html, ..jpg, .xml, .tex, .markdown, .mwiki, .doc, .odt, .txt; .png, .tji, .pdf, and .svg.

MindOnTrack

MindOnTrack is developed as a task manager, which has an inbuilt mind mapping tool. Here you will find options to add Reminders, manage Projects, make Mindmap, etc.

When you open this software, you will have to begin with a new blank map. Some options are available on the left panel of the interface. Scroll down to find MindMapping at the end of the list. The mindmap tool is pretty vast, just like Freemind. Begin creating a mindmap by adding a topic, and further add subtopics as required. You can also add a Floating Topic if required. Link two nodes, set boundary, or add a summary for a subtopic group.

To make your map more appealing, you can add background color, change text formatting, node shape and color, and attributes of connecting lines. Various map structure templates are available to build a mindmap according to requirement. These structures are: Fishbone, Matrix, Tree, Logic chart, etc.

Save your progress in XMind Workbook format, or export your mindmap as image, PDF, HTML, Text, etc.

Вывод

Компьютеры и программное обеспечение помогают существенно облегчить
нашу жизнь и сделать ее более комфортной. Программа FreeMind является
как раз одним из таких продуктов: она легко устанавливается, также
легко поддается изучению, очень эффективна для решения задач самого
широкого диапазона и имеет интересные способы экспортирования
результатов своей работы. Конечно, существуют некоторые негативные
моменты (а как же без них?) при работе с программой, но они настолько

hUMLa

hUMLa is a free and crossplatform mind mapping software, which is primarily a UML-class diagram maker. It is developed in Java, so it can run on Windows, Mac, or Linux.

By default, it creates a UML-class diagram, and when you select the Mindmap option, the diagram is converted into mindmap. Basically, UML-class diagram has rectangular nodes, and mindmaps has oval nodes. Also, you can define connection directions in UML-class diagram, but directions disappear in mindmaps.

To create a node, simply click on the canvas and type the content in the dialog box that appears. Click on the canvas to make another node. To connect two nodes, simply drag he mouse pointer from one node till another node. As soon as you release the drag, a dialog box appears, where you can define the connection type (only works with UML-class diagram).

You can save your project to use later, or export the mindmap as an Image in PNG format.

2. GitMind

GitMind is an easy-to-use online mind map tool. With it, you can visualize complicated concepts, generate new ideas, make lists with task priorities, and prepare for the presentation. Type in the topic name, and click Insert Node.

Choose Insert subnode to create sub-branches. And click the Relation line to show any relationship between ideas. You can assign a task priority, progress meter, flag, and more with the built-in symbols. To add a symbol, select the target node and click Icon from the toolbar.

At each node, click the Attachment button to insert links, images, and comments. There are many export options available, including TXT, PNG, PDF, DOCX, and SVG.

InfoRapid KnowledgeBase Builder

InfoRapid KnowledgeBase Builder is one of a kind mind mapping software, which follows a creative, but easy approach to make mindmaps. 3D view of mindmap makes this software more interesting to work with.

Create an Item as a node, then enter topic description if need be. Press Insert to add a sub-node to the Parent node. Sub nodes to the Child nodes can be added as well. The node and text color is customizable, and can be changed easily from the Properties window. New relationship arrows can be added and their directions can be changed as well.

Other advanced features are not available; however, the creative way of creating mindmaps easily in 3D is the catch.

You can easily save your progress and work on it later. You can also upload your work to cloud on this software’s server, but the uploaded item stays available only for 7 days. You can always export a created map as Image or CSV file.

The free version is only available for personal use; you cannot use it for commercial purposes.

Cmap

Cmap is a free mindmap software, with options to fully customize nodes and make simple as well as complex mind maps. Create a node, and begin creating Child and Sibling nodes to put down ideas systematically. When you click on an existing node, you will see an arrow pop up; drag it to place a new node.

There is a floating window available, where you can change Font attributes, Node style and color, Connecting line attributes, and the background color. I found it very easy to make mindmap with this software, as compared to most of the listed mind mapping software.

A mind map can be exported in PNG, PDF, PS, SVG, HTML, CXL, etc.

Если вы в первый раз открываете FreeMind, чистое поле диаграммы
готово для запечатления ваших, без всякого сомнения, блестящих идей.
Щелкните мышью на New Mindmap и измените заголовок вашей будущей работы
(например -«FCM — статья о программе FreeMind»).

Нажмите клавишу Insert для вставки пункта первого уровня (например,
«Введение»). Нажмите клавишу Enter для вставки второго пункта первого
уровня (например, «Установка приложения»). Создайте новый дочерний узел
и заполните его своими свежими идеями, бурлящими в вашей голове.

Для ускорения процесса работы используйте сочетания клавиш:
перемещаться от одного узла к другому можно с помощью клавиш-стрелок;
основное редактирование производиться с помощью клавиш Insert, Enter,
Escape и Delete; для редактирования текста внутри выбранного узла
воспользуйтесь клавишей F2.

Конечно, вы можете использовать и мышь для выбора узла или пункта
меню, а также кнопки для создания карты ума в целом. Щелчок мыши на
родительском узле открывает или закрывает все узлы (родительский и все
его дочерние). Вы можете перемещать карту целиком в любое место
рабочего пространства методом обычного drag’n’drop — зажимаете мышью
рисунок и перетаскиваете его, не отпуская, в нужное место.

Исходя из чисто практических целей, первоначальные размеры узлов
достаточно маленькие. Но вы можете сделать их бóльшего размера, в
случае необходимости. Можно добавить поясняющую надпись для выбранного
узла (это делается в нижнем окне). Вы имеете возможность
воспользоваться простым встроенным html-редактором для форматирования
текста или даже для создания таблиц. Опытные пользователи могут
просматривать готовый html-код (вторая вкладка внизу окна). Надпись
может быть как текстом заголовка (узел) так и дополнительной поясняющей
записью для пункта.

Нажатие сочетания клавиш Alt+I открывает каталог с
предустановленными иконками. Вы можете выбрать любую из них для
добавления к узлу на вашей карте. Добавление иконок делает ее более
читаемой и интуитивно понятной (становятся четко различимыми уровни по
их значимости, история развития проекта и ожидаемый результат). Иконки
для карты можно подобрать в вертикальной панели инструментов.

Имеется функция, которая делает эту программу по настоящему
высококлассным продуктом — узлы карты могут быть преобразованы в
гиперссылки (меню Insert — Hyperlink). Это делает использование
диаграммы крайне удобным и полезным. Узлам можно назначить адреса: на
файлы в локальной системе, на разнообразные ресурсы в Интернете,
«привязать» к ним почтовые ящики; можно сделать ссылку на другую часть
той же или какой-либо другой карты. Вы даже можете назначить картинку
узлу или объединить узлы графической ссылкой (наличие этой возможности
вам необходимо проверить в меню программы).

Если вам нужно поменять порядок узлов, вы легко это можно сделать
путем перетаскивания выбранных узлов в другое место. Тень,
отбрасываемая узлом при его перетаскивании, имеет служебную цель — она
показывает место, где будет располагаться в будущем этот узел; а также
то, будет ли он дочерним или родительским узлом.

В пункте меню Tools доступны еще несколько специальных функций
FreeMind. Например, имеется возможность создания узлов с таймером —
служат для установки напоминаний для пользователя на карте памяти.
Отредактированные узлы выделяются при этом желтым цветом.

Еще одна способность программы — поиск информации на диаграмме.
Например, если ваша карта ума становится слишком большой и на ней
трудно что-либо найти, можно воспользоваться фильтром поиска (находится
в горизонтальном меню, четвертая иконка слева), который служит для
поиска узлов. Или же применить фильтр для поиска текста — нажмите
иконку фильтра и задайте нужный вам фильтр поиска.

Run Freemind from the zip

This isn’t how ubuntu folks like to do things, but for programs that are not maintained with up-to-date versions in their repositories, or any ppa repository, you can often easily run such programs if they are in java without «installing» them. Download the «bin-max» zip version of whichever freemind version you’d like. Unzip. To run Freemind in Linux (like Ubuntu), there are 2 good options. Before that, it is recommended that you create a folder called «Programs» or something where you can save java applications like Freemind, Freeplane, Cron-o-meter, etc. You should also rename the unzipped application folder that you place there to just «freemind», so you don’t have to fix the directory paths in your launcher when you update the program version in the future.

Option 1. command line (terminal): open a terminal and change directory to the place where you put your unzipped Freemind folder, for example:

cd ‘/home/YOUR-USER-NAME/Programs/freemind’

then, run the freemind.sh:

sh ‘freemind.sh’

Option 2. instead, you can make a nice little entry in your applications menu with the icon, which basically automates the above actions. This way is nice, because then you can launch it easily with GNOME Do or similar app launchers. To do this in Ubuntu (the process is similar in other distros: search for ‘create launcher application’ on google or something if you need to): Search online for image file: «freemind.png», download, save next to freemind folder. Open System>Preferences>Main Menu. In the options, navigate to the submenu location where you’d like it to go, such as «Office». Then click New Item, and create its launcher like so: To the left, click on the icon, and browse to the icon file freemind.png, select. For name, put Freemind, obviously. Then for command, enter this:

sh -c «cd ‘/home/YOUR-USER-NAME/Programs/freemind’ && sh ‘freemind.sh'»

When you upgrade, it is best if you take note of any option preference changes you have made, and then apply them again in the new version rather than trying to use the same preferences file.

Alternatives

There are some alternatives to Freemind like VYM:

sudo apt-get install vym

or like kdissert (requires KDE):

sudo apt-get install kdissert

But they are not compatible with Freemind maps, so if you already have Freemind maps, it is better to use Freemind. I have found Freemind most productive and usable due to its shortcuts.

Application areas

Freeplane supports much more than classic static mind mapping. This is illustrated by the mind map Application areas on the right, which summarizes the kind of tasks supported by Freeplane. Click on the hyperlink below the image to navigate the map. Read the node called Caption to learn how to navigate the map and unhide hidden information. Click the node Demonstration creating a map to see how easy it is to make a map.

In the center of the map, Application areas you see the central topic (root node) of the map. Extending from it are branches with subtopics (child nodes). At the border you see free topics (free nodes) which are independent of the root-tree. All topics can be formatted or styled and can contain text, hyperlinks, pictures and more; and can be connected with labelled lines or arrows. Also a topic (node) can represent hidden information which displays when the user wants it or can be automatically executed (formula). Content can also be password protected or connected to a particular time or filter.

YouMinds Composer

YouMinds Composer lets you make detailed mindmaps for free. Although the free version does not have all the features the Pro version has, it can create mindmaps easily. Along with mindmaps, you can make Timeline, Organizational chart, and Note sheet book with this free mind map program.

Adding a Parent node, Child node, and Sibling nodes is easy, and can be done by pressing respective shortcuts. Nodes can be customized here, and you can change node color, shape, opacity texture, size, and much more. Text formatting lets you choose text font, color, and size. Visual tags can be added to nodes in form of smileys as well as clipart. You can also add Hyperlink to nodes here.

A task manager is available to add tasks for specific date along with task priority.

An advanced filter is available, which can be used to look for desired text or node across a vast map.

Export options are available for a vast range of formats: png, jpg, bmp, svg, html, pdf, and txt.

This mind mapping software has a very interesting feature to start a team session to collaborate and make a mindmap. There’s also a chat box to chat with the team participating in a session.

Blumind

Blumind is an amazing brain mapping software, which will impress you with its simplicity to let you make mindmaps. You can work on multiple mindmaps side by side, customize topic nodes, add icons, add progress bars, and do much more.

On a fresh mindmap canvas, a Center topic node is provided; double click to add text. Topics and subtopics can be added easily, either by keyboard shortcuts, through the context menu, or through icons on the interface. Copy a node and paste it anywhere on the canvas or on another mindmap. Options to change Node properties let you change Text formatting, Node color, Add icons, Add hyperlink, and Map layout.

If you want your mindmap to look attractive, you can choose from a long list of themes available in various color schemes.

An additional feature that this mindmap program has is a countdown timer. You can set a timer by defining hours, minutes, and seconds.

To save your progress on the mindmap, simply use the Save option. Mindmaps can also be exported as PNG, JPEG, TIF, GIF, SVG, or TXT.

Оформление карты

Добавленную информацию можно оформлять, изменяя размер шрифтов, цвета, добавляя пиктограммы и т.д. При составлении простых карт часто бывает полезно использовать функцию автоматического форматирования. Воспользоваться ей можно через пункт меню «Формат / Автоматическое форматирование».

Сразу после выбора этого пункта меню программа автоматически поменяет внешний вид для узлов первого, второго и третьего уровней.

Используя другие пункты меню в разделе «Формат» можно настраивать внешний вид каждого узла или целой группы выбранных узлов. А нажав значок пиктограммы в левой панели программы можно прикрепить эту пиктограммы ко всем выделенным узлам.

Удалить пиктограмму из узла можно с помощью пункта меню «Вставка / Пиктограммы / Удалить последнюю пиктограмму». Благодаря форматированию можно привести создаваемые карты к довольно привлекательному и наглядному виду.

• Changing views by hiding content (folding branches, filtering, roll-up of details and hiding extensions in tooltip), finding, scrolling and navigating;
• Tasking with calendar and reminders;
• Password protecting of whole map and of individual nodes with DES encryption;
• Ease of use with inline- and dialog editors, object oriented main menu, context menu’s, multi-language support, spell checker, properties panel, drag& drop functionality, hot keys, options for batch execution, publishing, sharing and selectable preferences;
• Approximate Search (similarity search) which allows to find search terms in a text, even if there is no exact match (e.g. «setup» = «set up» or «flie» = «file»).
• Support for LaTeX formulae underneath/in nodes
• Easy extension of functionality with add-ons and home made scripts;
• Integration with Docear academic literature suite;
• Extensive support through Wiki and Forum; and tutorial and documentation in the form of a mind map.

The map called Freeplane functions illustrates the main functions of Freeplane. Besides it provides an index with hyperlinks to the tutorial an documentation where you can read more. The links are hidden at first, but become visible and can be clicked if you hover with the cursor over a function (node). This is another example of the power of Freeplane. Docear is developed as an Academic Literature Suite, where you can create vast mindmaps. This open source mind mapping software is free to use and is cross-platform, available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The tools and options available to build mindmaps are extensive; lets take a look.

The interface displays options to add Parent node, Child node, Sibling node, Summary node, or Free node. You can easily move a node up/down/right/left, split node, merge nodes, and do much more.

The option to connect two nodes lets you change connection direction, opacity, connector shape, width, etc. Links can be added to nodes; these links can be hyperlinks or links to files stored locally on your PC or network.

Encryption is provided for security. You can either create an encrypted mindmap, or simply encrypt a branch.

Собственно говоря, редактировать элементы построенного дерева можно стандартными для большинства текстовых редакторов методами. А именно, можно делать следующее:

Выделять сразу несколько элементов с помощью мыши с нажатыми клавишами Shift или Ctrl. При нажатой клавише Alt можно выделить все дочерние узлы для выбранного узла. Также работает выделение с помощью стрелок клавиатуры и зажатой клавиши Shift.

Удалять выбранные узлы нажатием клавиши Delete или через контекстное меню.

Копировать выбранные узлы в буфер обмена и после этого вставлять их из буфера, присоединяя в другое место карты.

Перемещать узлы с помощью мыши. При нажатой клавише Ctrl узлы будут не перемещаться, а копироваться.

Перемещать узлы с помощью стрелок клавиатуры и зажатой клавиши Ctrl. В этом случае можно менять порядок смежных узлов (стрелками «вверх/вниз»), а также изменять глубину вложенности узла в иерархии (стрелками «влево/вправо»)

Также в программе предусмотрен и ряд других операций, которых достаточно много. Но при редактировании карт можно большей частью обходиться и без них.

5. Scapple

When you draft an outline, you can work out if the ideas connect, what order works best, identify gaps in your thinking, and confirm your thoughts with proven facts. Scapple is an intuitive app for jotting your ideas down by developing connections between them. It’s the software equivalent of pen and paper.

Unlike typical mind-mapping software, Scapple doesn’t force you to make connections, nor do you have to begin with a central idea. It’s a freeform writing app with an expandable canvas to fit all your notes. You can move notes around to make room for new connections, edit and resize them, and export them to PDF.

Unique Features

• Stack notes on top of one another to create lists or columns of text. They’re useful for maintaining a list of related ideas that don’t belong in a single note.
• Add links to the text within notes or even files on your computer. You can even draw a background shape around a group of links and concepts.
• Incrementally search through the document and even replace text. It is useful for quickly jumping from one cluster to the next on a large canvas.

XMind

The free version of XMind, a fully loaded mind mapping tool, lets you create amazing and expressive mindmaps. You can begin writing down your ideas on a blank canvas, or you can select a mind mapping template to begin working with. You can also select the type of node map or chart according to your requirement, followed by theme selection. All these options let you customize your mindmap to make it look better.

Talking about the features that count the most, Nodes and Links can be added pretty easily. Here nodes are referred to as Topics. Under a Parent topic, you can add Topics and Sub-topics. If you are on a sub topic, you can insert a Parent topic or Topic before. For all these operations, shortcuts are assigned. You can add a separate node apart from the main tree; its called as a Floating topic.

To connect a Floating topic, use the Relationship option. For each node, you can add Labels, add Notes, add Hyperlinks, add Comments, and add Attachments.

Text formatting option of this brain mapping software lets you change map structure, choose map style, change text attributes (font, size, color, etc.), node shapes, node borders, and attributes of connecting lines.

Another good option available here is that you can add icons as markers. These markers include icons to display numbers, task priority, task progress, flags, stars, arrows, symbols, months, days of week, and some emoticons. Simply drag a marker and drop at the desired node.

A mind map can be saved as XMind Workbook and exported as JPEG and XML. Other export options are also available, but they are available in the Pro version.

There are various other features that you can unlock by upgrading to Pro version. Some of the Pro features are: Mind map merge, Clipart, Audio notes, Gantt chart, export as PDF/DOC, Slideshow, etc.

Электронный формат древовидной структуры позволяет сворачивать и разворачивать ее ветви, благодаря чему можно быстро и удобно получить доступ к нужным узлам даже на картах с большим количеством элементов. Главное при этом — соблюдать баланс и не создавать слишком много непосредственных дочерних узлов у одного родителя. В программе также заложены возможности форматирования элементов карты, благодаря которым можно значительно повысить привлекательность и наглядность интеллект карт. Также в программе есть много других дополнительных возможностей, которые могут быть полезны в отдельных случаях. Но поскольку при создании ментальных карт без них обычно можно обойтись, то глубоко изучать их не обязательно.

FreeMind является узкоспециальным продуктом, разработанным под конкретные задачи вроде создания диаграмм связей, и не включающим в себя лишний функционал. Теперь чтобы редактировать разветвленные схемы и визуализации любой сложности, нет необходимости в установке полного пакета офисных программ.
