Примечательно, что на этих видеоредакторах было смонтировано большое количество известных кинолент, из которых можно выделить мультипликационный фильм «Труп невесты», супергеройский боевик «Люди Икс: Начало. Росомаха», криминальную трагикомедию «Фокус» с Уиллом Смитом и Марго Робби в главных ролях.

What is Finale?

These days, Grand Finale is the word used to describe the last round of any reality programs which is also the round to decide the winner of the show. Finale was earlier reserved only for the concluding part of a concert where the performer raised the tempo and mesmerized the audience with his skills. Figuratively, it is used to refer to the last and the most important thing in the entire act.

These days, TV series that continue for many seasons usually have a finale every season that indicates the last episode for the season. For example, Master Chef, which is a reality show in Australian TV, has been continuing for many seasons, but every year has a grand finale where the winner of that season is declared.

There are some instances where the word finale cannot be used and the final moment of truth is one instance where finale can never be used. Now let us summarize the difference between the two words.

MusicXML 3.1 is included in Finale v25.4

MusicXML is the technology used to exchange music with others – regardless of what software they use. Finale 25.4 includes a new version, MusicXML 3.1. In addition to being compatible with the new SmartMusic, 3.1 also offers improved conversion of the following items:

• Arrowhead symbols
• Circled noteheads
• Dynamics such as n, pf, and sfzp symbols
• Hidden ledger lines
• Enclosures with more than 4 sides
• Expressions or text blocks that contain a mix of Maestro text and symbols
• Parenthesized accidental marks
• Unexpected Maestro symbols used for articulations
• Distinction between Finale’s two default percussion clefs (rectangle and vertical lines)

The benefits of MusicXML 3.1 are also available to users of Finale 2009-2014.5 via the Dolet 7 Plugin. For further information on the MusicXML 3.1 features in Finale 25.4 and the Dolet 7 plug-in see these release notes.

What underlying technologies does it rely on?

Robert Puff (RP): JetStream runs on the Elgato Stream Deck. The Stream Deck was originally created by Elgato for video gamers and broadcasters. 

The hardware comes in two backlit, tactile key configurations. There is a 15 LCD key version and a 32 LCD key XL version.

There is also an iOS and Android App version of JetStream that is identical in functionality to the 15-key hardware version, the only difference is that both of the hardware versions have tactile keys. All versions of Stream Deck display instantly familiar icons for Finale users—for instance the Smart Shapes and other Tools.

On the software side, JW Lua by Jari Williamsson is the central hub around which JetStream is built, with native AppleScript on the Mac and AutoIT on Windows performing basic menu and tool selection tasks. The Keyboard Maestro version uses the Lua functions of JetStream; and is designed to integrate directly into a user’s existing KM workflow.

JW: Our main Lua script has almost 500 unique functions in it!

RP: …all told, there are currently around 1,000 functions in the Stream Deck versions of Jetstream. 

JW: And development is also being done using AutoHotkey (Windows) and the Touch Portal mobile app.

What’s your favorite JetStream feature?

JW: Personally, I already have a lot of functions mapped to keyboard shortcuts on both Windows and Mac, so the things I love the most are the various Lua functions that essentially automate multiple steps. 

The dynamics features are a good example: I think it’s so cool being able to select a region  and hit a few buttons and automatically have dynamic expressions and hairpins applied at musically meaningful locations aligned at the correct height! Or being able to change all the noteheads in a region quickly to different shapes with a single button push.

RP: For me, every time we add a new function to JetStream, that is my current favorite! I love the new Tacet creation function, for instance.

Finale v25.4 Bug Fixes

Finale 25.4 also includes many bug fixes. We’ve highlighted a few below.

Windows only:

• Launching Finale by double-clicking on a Finale file on an external drive no longer produces an authorization error message.
• Finale now launches successfully on systems which also have ProTools 12 installed.  

Mac only:

• Fixed crashes that could occur when specific Simple and Speedy Entry keyboard shortcuts were invoked.
• Repaired truncated text in impacted dialog boxes.
• N-up printing scaling has been restored.
• Setting the audio buffer size to 32 no longer produces a crash.

Функциональность

Инструменты Finale организованы в несколько иерархически организованных палитр, и для добавления или редактирования любого конкретного класса элемента партитуры необходимо выбрать соответствующий инструмент (например, инструмент Smart Shape для создания и редактирования линий трелей и «шпилек» (так называемые потому что символы напоминают заколки для волос ); инструмент Staff для добавления и редактирования параметров отдельных нотоносцев). Наряду с этими инструментами доступны дополнительные элементы управления для просмотра или скрытия до четырех наложенных слоев музыки, которые могут быть введены в любой конкретный нотоносец, с целью организации нескольких контрапунктных голосов на одном и том же нотоносце. I can’t take full credit for this one. Emily Grishman, the great New York City Theater Copyist, talks about how when she first learned Finale, she spent a ton of time simply clicking on every menu and reading, one by one, every single item in every single menu. Then she read every item in all of the submenus, as well. After that, she started opening windows and read all of the items available in those windows. She did all of this before she even entered a note in Finale. Although I wondered how long it took her to do that, it’s a brilliant strategy for learning Finale, not to mention any other computer program.

The idea behind this is that you’re giving yourself an overview of the whole program: looking at the forest before you start looking at the trees. If you’re brand new to Finale, you will likely not understand half of what you’re reading, but the idea is that you’re giving your brain a roadmap as to where to find things. You will eventually come to a point where you need to do a specific task and you may recall seeing something related to that task in one of the menus or windows. You’ll search around, find what you’re looking for, and begin exploring what it does. If you don’t read everything first, you may not even think to look!

A couple of important items that my students often overlook are the “Show Active Layer Only” option (Document Menu) and the “Move/Copy Layers…” option (Edit Menu). When you first open Finale and see those items, they will likely have no meaning to you, but once you start learning more about Layers, just knowing that those options exist, as well as exploring what they can do is going to give you a significant advantage.

Who has contributed to its development?

RP: The core development group is Jacob Winkler, CJ Garcia, Nick Mazuk (Finale Superuser), and myself. As a team, we were fortunate to connect with one another in the way that we did. We all share the same goal of providing something really useful for the Finale user community. 

We started a Slack channel for beta testing and development, and a number of people from all over the world popped in and out as beta testers and contributed some really great ideas that really raised the bar. For instance, Riccardo del Prete in Italy improved our button graphics. We are grateful to all of the people who have helped us release JetStream. I have to give a shoutout to CJ Garcia—he really stepped up with a ton of the initial programming; maintained a GitHub of all of the test builds and a bunch of other stuff.

Jake and Nick were instrumental in helping bring JetStream to Finale users on both the Mac and Windows side. Jake also wrote all of the installation documentation for JetStream.

Think like Finale thinks

Computers don’t think like musicians. But musicians also don’t think like computers. The interface between the two has always been the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for any notation program. Finale’s logic and organization allow for it to be a very streamlined computer program. But it’s still just that—a computer program.

As musicians, we tend to categorize items by their musical function. Dynamics, for example, would include mezzo-forte markings, as well as hairpins. But Finale, which takes a tools-based approach to organization, puts those related items in separate tools. Meanwhile, an accent, a fermata, a mordent, and harmonics all exist within the Articulation Tool even though those items are an articulation, a pause, an ornament, and a playing technique respectively. So what gives?

Finale categorizes items by how they attach to the page, the measure, or the notes, not by how we would categorize them musically. Dynamics, tempo markings, rehearsal markings, technique texts, etc., are all lumped together in the Expression Tool because of how they attach to a single point in a measure. And slurs, hairpins, octave lines, glissandi, etc. are all part of the Smart Shape Tool because they are all extendable shapes that start at one point in a measure (or on a note) and end at another. A fermata, an accent, and a mordent share a similar trait in that they all get attached to a single note or chord. It can be confusing because fermatas, accents, and mordents exist in what Finale calls the Articulation Tool, even though they’re not all (musically speaking) articulations. (Perhaps the “Items That Attach To a Single Note, Chord or Rest Tool” would have been a bit too cumbersome in the user interface.)

When you start to get a little deeper into the program, recognizing that Finale breaks things into individual and immutable “Frames” (a single measure within a single staff), will be important when you need to do things that break the normal mold of notation. Ultimately, you can’t fight the Frames. However, recognizing what can be done to the Frames to make them appear as something other than a constant grid of horizontal staves and vertical measures will allow you to create any type of non-standard notation you can think of.

Essentially, Finale’s logic is to group things in a way that’s easier to organize in the programming code. It can be tricky to find your way into that logic but ultimately it’s that organization that allows Finale to do more with fewer options and windows. So, don’t fight it; embrace it! Once you do, the sky’s the limit.

• мало обучающих видео и литературы, поясняющих работу тех или иных функций;
• отсутствие русскоязычного интерфейса.
