Synthetic Benchmarks

Because Brave is based on the same core web rendering engine and internals as Chrome and several other browsers, synthetic performance tests tend to give the same results when comparing Brave and Chrome. Brave’s advantage isn’t that it’s better at running complex JavaScript or doing advanced DOM manipulation — all Blink-based browsers score roughly the same at this, Brave included. Brave’s advantage is having to do far less work because it only loads the parts of pages that matter. Getting the same marks on synthetic benchmarks doesn’t reflect Brave’s real-word performance, but we compared it against all major browsers to make sure that nothing we do affects it negatively either.

We benchmarked all browsers against 4 popular synthetic benchmarks:

• Kraken 1.1 that measures the speed of several different test cases extracted from real-world applications and libraries. Created by Mozilla.
• Speedometer 2.0, focusing on a simple application implemented in a range of different popular JavaScript frameworks. Created by Apple.
• JetStream 2 combines together a variety of JavaScript and Web Assembly benchmarks, covering a variety of advanced workloads and programming techniques.
• BaseMark Web 3.0, primarily testing real-time web graphics and some of the most popular JavaScript frameworks.

Since the MacOS and Windows machines have different hardware, the results on each are not directly comparable, only the different browsers on the specific machine are. We use orange colour for MacOS tests and blue for Windows. The benchmarks themselves also provide somewhat noisy metrics — we highlight the error margin in gray in each measurement.

The benchmarks also differ in their robustness — the error margins across multiple runs on the same version of a browser, the same hardware and operating system suggest that a direct comparison of a single measurement should be considered with caution. This is especially visible in the case of BaseMark Web 3.0 benchmark. Note, however, that all Chromium-based browsers perform very similarly (i.e. within the error margin indicated in gray) on both MacOS and Windows. This is expected, since the underlying engine responsible for JavaScript execution and HTML rendering is the same.

Keeping the web open to everyone with built-in privacy protections and significant efficiency gains

This blog was written by Dr. Andrius Aucinas, Dr. Matteo Varvello, performance researchers at Brave, and Dr. Ben Livshits, Brave’s Chief Scientist.

In 2019,  Brave reached a major milestone with the release of the 1.0 version. As ever, web browsing performance is a key priority for Brave, so we set out to evaluate in detail how it stacks up against the competition and devised a methodology for doing so. In our “1.0 reviewer guide”, we summarized the significant savings Brave users can expect.  In the spirit of transparency, we here present our methodology and detailed results.

Brave is open source and is built on top of two other open source projects: the Chromium project and the Blink rendering engine. The Chromium Project was established by Google, based on Apple’s WebKit. The goal was to take the work Google had done building Chrome and create a shared core for any browser which wants to use it. Chromium is now the building block for most contemporary web browsers. Using Chromium as a foundation lets Brave’s small team focus on building the powerful features which set the browser apart rather than the core web-browsing experience shared by all browsers.

Most websites try to send large amounts of data, of which only a little is the “stuff” the user actually wants to see. The rest is advertising, trackers, and other material which takes extra time and data to download, occupies space in memory, and needs more CPU time and power to process. Because Brave blocks third party all of that out of the box, it’s considerably faster than other browsers. And that’s doubly true on slower or laggier connections where every bit counts, or older devices where every stray CPU cycle or bit of RAM rapidly adds up.

For the 1.0 evaluation, we put together a comprehensive testbed, pitting Brave against Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge on Windows, MacOS, and Android.  We use the testbed to compare these browsers across memory use, page load speed, data and power use, as well as traditional synthetic benchmarks. We discuss in detail the methodology and techniques that we used in working out the savings we wrote about at 1.0 launch: that Brave ends up loading popular web pages 3x to 6x faster, while using about half the memory and power as well as a third of data, saving seconds of time and megabytes of data for every page load.

What should I do if I’m a publisher or creator?

If you are a publisher, or planning to verify as a publisher with Brave, you can sign up here. If you are already signed up, you need to use your login to your Brave Rewards publisher account to add your Uphold account and receive earnings that are transferred to your Uphold account by the 8th of every month.

Brave browser users can contribute to and tip their favorite content creators at any time privately, and their contributions are made available to content creators participating every month as earnings.

What is a «verified» publisher?

Before a publisher is able to receive contributions, they need to demonstrate that they control their domain (e.g. “example.com”). Brave uses a challenge-response protocol for this purpose.

If the exchange is successful, we know that our automated systems are communicating with the publisher who controls the domain. Brave Software neither endorses nor disavows sites that verify; we report whether they have verified or not.

What is an «unverified» publisher?

If a publisher has yet to sign up with Brave Rewards to earn rewards from Brave browser users, they are considered unverified. Publishers can sign up at anytime to become “verified” and claim their available earnings.

How does Brave distribute my contribution among publishers?

Your monthly contribution is created using a computer algorithm which takes into account things like number of visits each site, the time spend on each page, etc. It does this securely and anonymously.

As your monthly contribution time approaches, you’ll receive an in-browser alert allowing you to review and adjust contributions before they are processed.

How do I collect tips and contributions as a publisher?

A “verified” publisher simply needs to establish an Uphold account to collect and/or convert BAT contributions . Contributions accrued on a monthly basis are processed and sent to the Publisher’s Uphold account using their choice of currency.

If a “verified” publisher is participating in the Brave referral program, payments for all confirmed Brave users will be also be paid out during this cycle. The cycle repeats each month and payments are normally paid out by the 8th of every month.

An “unverified” publisher needs to become verified before connecting their Uphold account. More details are available at publishers.basicattentiontoken.org.

Where does my contribution go if a publisher/website is not part of this program yet?

Publishers must verify ownership of their properties with Brave in order to receive contributions from Brave users. If a publisher has not verified ownership, then a user’s contributions will be held in reserve inside the browser for 90 days. The browser routinely updates an internal list of all verified publishers to determine whether a property can receive contributions. At the end of the 90 day period, any contributions marked for unverified publishers will be released back to the wallet. No funds leave the browser except to go to verified creators.

Previous versions of Brave

Previous versions of the Brave desktop browser worked differently. Until version 0.58.21, released on January 11, 2019, browsers with Brave Rewards enabled would contribute BAT to content creators whether or not they had verified. Brave would then hold contributed funds for those publishers in escrow until they’d verified.

Brave servers will continue to hold previously-contributed BAT on behalf of those unverified publishers, in the following manner:

• Funds that were contributed from a token grant provided by Brave will be returned to Brave’s User Growth Pool if the funds remain unclaimed for a year.
• Funds that were contributed from user-funded wallets will be held indefinitely, until the publisher verifies and transfers them to their own wallet.

С точки зрения дизайна это немного неоднозначно; есть достойный выбор историй из выбранных вами источников, представленных в эстетически приятном макете, с плитками, содержащими отдельные истории, перемежаемые списками из отдельных источников новостей и «объединенными» категориями. Некоторые изображения героев неудобно обрезаны, что лишает макета некоторой визуальной лоска; Храбрый мог бы сделать, вырвав листок из книги Твиттера и используя умный алгоритм автообрезки, но это не помеха.

Если вы предпочитаете взять представленный контент Brave Today в свои руки, то есть хорошие новости — недавнее обновление теперь позволяет пользователям добавлять RSS-каналы в свой канал Brave Today. Добавить канал так же просто, как нажать «Добавить источник» в настройках исходного кода браузера; в настоящее время вы можете добавить до пяти каналов, при этом поддержка неограниченного количества каналов обещана в будущем обновлении. Пользователи настольных компьютеров получат функцию настраиваемой ленты в будущем обновлении, а пользователи Android, конечно же, останутся в стороне до тех пор, пока Brave Today не появится на их платформе в целом.
