True Gapless Mode

True gapless mode intended for albums, that should sound as solid stream. It is live concerts, operas and other. After resampling at track borders, artefacts can appear. It happens due processing re-initialization at the begin each track. In True gapless mode initialization is performed at begin of first album track.

If True Gapless Mode turned on, album tracks are converted sequentially, one-by-one. There is need information about end of previous track before start processing next one.

Auto level normalization

As rule, 1-bit records have -6 dB headroom by sigma-delta modulator stability issues.

Auto level normalization allow to maximize album level with keeping relative levels of its tracks.

DFF DSF via command line tool dff2dsf (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux)

2. Unpack zip archive. Here three folders: linux, osx, win32 (compatible operation systems).

3. Open terminal window (terminal — under Mac OS X, cmd — under Windows).

4. Open folder linux/osx/win32 (as your operation system).

5. Type into command line:

     dff2dsf ‘<input path>/<input.dff>’ ‘<output path>/<output.dsf>’

Press <Enter> key.

6. Output dsf (output.dsf) placed into <output path>.

    Example under Windows:

     c:\dff2dsf-101\win32\dff2dsf.exe ‘c:\music\input.dff’ ‘c:\music\output.dsf’

    Example under Mac OS X:

     /Users/<username>/dff2dsf-101/osx/dff2dsf ‘/Users/<username>/input.dff’ ‘/Users/<username>/output.dsf’

How to Convert DSF to FLAC

To convert DSF (DSD files) to FLAC on Mac or Windows in high quality:

  1. Start audio converter software AuI ConverteR 48×44.

  2. Push Open files button and choose input .dsf (DSD file type)
     
  3. At main window (right middle part) > Format panel select target FLAC format, its sample rate and bit depth.
     
  4. Select target directory for converted files
    In the main window (left lower part) > Directory output files field.
    It can be as absolute as relative (of source file) directory.
    You can enter directory manually or via «…» button.
     
  5. Click Start button.
     
  6. Wait until conversion end. Look for converted files into target directory selected in goal 4.

Via connection command line tool dff2wav to HD audio conversion software AuI ConverteR 48×44 (Windows)

It is obsolete way. Strongly not recommended.

Disadvantages:

  • Decoder dff2wav.exe have limitation: 2.8 MHz (D64) only.
  • With the decoder DFF to DSF is converted thru intermediate resampled filtered WAV.

How get advantages:

Better way is using of full audio quality and abilities of edition or configurable . The editions automatically download and install dff2dsf utility for better audio performance (no intermediate conversion DFF to WAV). dff2dsf repack DFF to DSF without changing audio data.

Some albums like operas, live concerts have non-zero levels on track borders. Or some 1-bit audio ISOs has DC bias thru all tracks. It can give clicks sometime after converting.

In this case better choice is:

  • with True Gapless Conversion ability or
  • some Modula-R’s configurations, including True Gapless Mode module.

Remark: In FREE edition you can’t add new source format (see Settings window > Input formats tab > Input file format list). You can replace one of existing (as example dff).

2. In field Input converter executable select where placed downloaded dff to wav converter

3. In field Input converter command line type command line parameters

How RF64 works

Audio converter AuI ConverteR 48×44 support WAV 64-bit according RF64 specification.

  1. Output (converted) WAV file is created
    In its header, dummy block («JUNK» chunk by WAV specification) is added. It’s fully compatible with usual WAV. Most players must ignore the block.
     
  2. After conversion start, audio data are written to the WAV file.
     
  3. After end of conversion and writing, the converter check real size of output file.

    • If its size is more 4 GBytes, «JUNK» block is replaced to «ds64» block with RF64 parameters (64-bit file length, etc.).
      Also name of first WAV block is replaced from «RIFF» to «RF64» and its size is set to maximal value (0xFFFFFFFF in hex format).
      Size of block «data» (audio data) is replaced to 0xFFFFFFFF.
      Now it is real WAV RF64 file.
       
    • If size of the file less 4 GB, audio file stay ordinary WAV.

RF64 settings

  1. If in AuI converteR’s Settings > Metadata  > «Force 32-bit wav» switch is checked, block JUNK is not created and next steps don’t work.
    It’s need for compability with some players and software.
     
  2. For some pro audio applications, it is need to reserve place for RF64 markers (time points of audio data). AuI reserve place in begin of file for the markers.
    Audio players usually don’t use the markers. To avoid the marker place reserving, in Settings > Metadata > uncheck «No markers RF64» switch.

PCM to DSD, DSD to PCM conversion audio quality depend on signal-processing precision. But it is lossy action anyway.

As rule, offline (non-realtime) converter DSF to PCM or PCM to DSF implemented on computer have fewer time computing restrictions, comparing with real-time processing. Offline processing may allow higher calculation precision, that consume additional time. Qualitative offline processing may be performed at old computers even.

If processing is performed once, it save electric energy that computer consume in intensive calculations.

PCM 32-bit, DSD 256 and above in the tests have measurement tool limitation. Therefore, all these formats were placed at first position.

DSD sample rate is matter of noise level inside useful band. Reducing the noise level can cause instability of sigma-delta modulator. However higher sample rate allow to reduce noise and get wider musical signal band.

Introduction

ISO audio file is file-container, that included one or several mix(mixes) of one album.

Mix is variant of album tracks (songs). As example, file-container may contains stereo and multichannel variants (mixes) of one album.

If your protable digital audio player or mobile phone playback at stereo headphones, downmix multichannel songs to stereo allow to place more music in limited hard disk space.

As example, you extract 2.0-mix from file-container (with 5.1 and 2.0) to DSF, WAV, FLAC, AIFF и пр. Stereo (2 channels) file demands lower disk space, than 5.1 (6 channels) variant.

If your system support multuchannel records, you can extract 5.1 mix to keep free space at hard disk in music server, streamer or dedicated to playback multimedia fast network attached storage (NAS).

As rule, SACD ISO images contains stereo mix only or both stero and multichannel variants. Pure multichanned file-containers are more rare.

Backup of original (non-converted) audio files is strongly recommended. Because, converted files can be lost, new playback equipment with other audio resolution can be purchased.
Backup storage may be slow and use compression to save budget USD per Gbyte.

How to convert FLAC to DSF

1. In main window click Open files button. Appear Open dialog.

As alternative possibly click Open dir button. If Subdir button checked (led is lighted), AuI ConverteR will scan directories for all files with allowable extensions.

If there placed CUE files, recommended open each cue separatelly for avoiding conversion audio file that linked with the cue twice.
2. Select output directory
In main window of the converter (left lower part) Directory output files field

It can be as absolute as relative (by source FLAC file) directory.
 

3. Select target format of audio files in AuI ConverteR’s main window (right middle part) Format field.

4. Click Start button.
Wait for end of conversion. Converted files see in directory that selected in goal 2.

How Install Codec Manually?

Input decoders and installed and connected to AuI ConverteR by different ways. Some codecs can demands right for creation temporary files in installing directory.

Install input decoder

1. Download codec what you need by link above according your operation system.

2. Unpack codec to some folder (folder of the codec further).

    If the codec have installer, run installer and perform installation.

3. Run AuI ConverteR. Click Settings button. Appear Settings window.

4. For connecting to AuI ConverteR input decoder in Settings window select Input formats tab (for connect output encoder go to that point):

5.  If you want replace one of existing decoders, select wanted extension from drop-down list Input file format (top left of the Input formats tab).

If you want add new decoder

— click Add button;

— enter name of new file extension in Displayed name and File Extension fields.

6. Click … (3 dots) button close to Input converter executable field and select executable from the folder of the codec (what was downloaded and installed in goals 1-2).

7. Correct (if need) or enter (if new extension added) command line parameters of the executable (goal 6) in Input converter command line params field.

If you manually download and install decoder that contains in AuI ConverteR’s settings file, skip this goal.

8. Click OK button of Settings window.

1. Download codec what you need by link above according your operation system.

2. Unpack codec to some folder (folder of the codec further).

    If the codec have installer, run installer and perform installation.

3. Run AuI ConverteR. Click Settings button. Appear Settings window.

4. For connecting to AuI ConverteR output decoder in Settings window select Output formats tab:

5.  If you want replace one of existing encoders, select wanted extension from drop-down list Output file format (top left of the Output formats tab).

If you want add new encoder

— click Add button;

— enter name of new file extension in Displayed name and File Extension fields.

6. Click … (3 dots) button close to Output converter executable field and select executable from the folder of the codec (what was downloaded and installed in goals 1-2).

7. Correct (if need) or enter (if new extension added) command line parameters of the executable (goal 6) in Output converter command line params field.

If you manually download and install encoder that contains in AuI ConverteR’s settings file, skip this goal.

8. Click OK button of Settings window.

Sound quality of conversion

Different audio conversion software can be of different quality noise/distortion level.

AuI ConverteR vs a converter software: DSD64 to PCM 44.1 kHz aliases

In ideal case, should not be repeatable lines with lower brightness. These lines show audible distortions, that correlate with original signal.

Speed of conversion may depend on conversion accuracy.

Sometimes reducing playback noise level can be achieved via frequency band reducing of converted music stuff.

Check AuI ConverteR’s Settings > General tab > Filter mode list. If you have noise during playing back of converted FLAC, use «Optimized mode» for DSF to FLAC conversion.

Output format compression

FLAC compression level don’t alter qound quality of music. After unpacking binary content is same for any compression level.

Check AuI ConverteR’s Settings > General tab > FLAC compressing slider.

Metadata

Metadata from input files may be exported into output ones, including artwork.

AuI ConverteR with metadata editor option allow batch editing mrtadata of albums (group of files) and assigning own album artwork.

Есть Taskam, но не пойму её. Что есть ещё, может и под Андроид есть?

А разве возможно редактирование dsd без промежуточной конвертации в pcm и соответственно без потери всех плюсов dsd ?

Зачем редактировать? Просто уменьшить количество отсчетов, залезать в PCM не надо.

Я тоже понижаю 128 в 64 для Naim ND5 XS. J River иногда ведет себя странно — вот буквально вчера при переводе альбома в 64 получился неприятный эффект, когда плеер переходит с первого трека на второй, происходит громкий щелчок в колонках. Причем если просто запустить второй трек, то его нет. И в конце первого его нет. Дальше все нормально. Повторные перекодировки не помогли.

Я перекодировал тот же альбом на Tascam — все в порядке. Если кто в теме, подскажите, как добавить в Tascam сразу весь альбом, а не перекодировать по одному треку?

Нет, к сожалению, в Tasman возможности пакетной перекодировки. Не нашёл, по крайней мере.

В последнее время не занимаюсь перекодировкой DSD128 в DSD64, а также перекодировкой .dsf в .dff.

Настроил Jriver так, что она делает перекодировку «на лету”, во время воспроизведения.

Операция перекодировки совершенно не затратна в плане вычислительных ресурсов. Достаточно пропускать отсчеты сигнала через один.

Никаких щелчков нет, все совершенно гладко. И времени сколько освободилось!

Да, если бы я запускал с компа на цап, я бы тоже так делал, но я слушаю на сетевом плеере, ему нужны готовые файлы, которые он по витой паре вытаскивает из компа. J river выступает просто как медиасервер, а не как плеер. И при перекодировке не не на лету видимо его алгоритмы не всегда корректно справляются с проблемой удаления шума в dsd (

Sound quality settings

If input and output sample rates are different, resampling signal processing is used. Resampling base on filtering with settings described below.

At Settings > General tab > select one of Filter mode’s options:

  • «Optimized resampling filter» cut frequencies upper 20 kHz (eliminating intermodulation distortions by ultrasound);
  • «Non-Optimized resampling filter» remove all upper 20…24 kHz (depend on input/output sample rates) — eliminating intermodulation distortions by ultrasound, wider signal band;
  • «Non-Optimized wide resampling filter» suppress all upper 20…100 kHz (depend on input/output sample rates).

At some equipment «Non-Optimized…» modes can cause audible noise (see video).
Generally, «Optimized…» mode is recommended. But you can prefer other modes.

Use minimum phase filter switch checked/unchecked minimum/linear phase filtering when «Optimized resampling filter» is selected. Other modes use linear filtering only.

Dithering application have sense in 16 bit PCM target format only.
If output bit depth 24 bit and above (including 1-bit, float point PCM formats), dithering auto turn off.

2. Ways of ISO conversion

  • binary audio content of extracted files is fully identical to ISO-container audio data
     

  • Musical content may be accurate adjusted offline to «the best sounding» sample rate of your DAC to avoid «on fly» upsampling in audio player and/or hardware. Seamless resamplig allow to resample album with continuous musical content (opera, live concert, etc.) without artefacts at song borders.
     

  • Some albums can contains DC bias in all songs. The bias can cause pops at song borders.   

2.1. Bit perfect conversion

Exact ISO-binary-audio-content copying provided via bit perfect conversion. It is possible identical input and output sample rates. There are ISOs in 2.8 MHz (D64) only.

If you convert ISO to DSF in bit perfect mode, binary musical content of album in file-container will copied to DSF files without changes.

Gapless and clickless playback is provided by only.

Bit-perfect conversion supported by maximaland configurable.

Bit perfect conversion «Modula-R ISO extract (core)» module provide without other ones.

Manage Bit Perfect Conversion mode

In AuI ConverteR v.9.x:

At bottom of th main program windows click to status bar on or and, in context menu, select «Bit-perfect …».

In all versions:

1. In AuI ConverteR 48×44’s main window push Settings button.

2. Into Setting window select General tab.

3. Check Don’t make DSP… and uncheck Smooth DC switches.

4. Push OK button in Settings window.

2.2. Seamless resampling (True Gapless Conversion)

This mode allow convert album audio files without transient processes at song borders.

Seamless (gapless) processing is digital signal processing without re-initializing for each song (sound file).

At the picture border of merged neighbor album tracks is shown.

At picture’s upper part, tracks, converted without True gapless mode, are shown. There is noise splash (light vertical line) by transient process at border of songs is shown.

At picture’s bottom part, True Gapless Mode turned ON. There is no noise splash between neighbor songs.

Transient process at song border can be almost invisible at oscillogram, but listened as light artefact.

Gapless playback is provided by only.

True Gapless conversion supported by maximal AuI ConverteRand configurableModula-R.

True Gapless conversion mode work slower than usual parallel (multi-CPU) mode. Because seamless transient between album files is provided in sequiential processing.

2.3. DC biased audio content conversion (SmoothDC)

SmoothDC processing reduce at begin and end of song (sound file).

If pop located out of SmoothDC’s action time, the pop may be fixed via editing of converted audio file.

SmoothDC provided as additional gain control:

a) smooth and fast gain increasing in song begin,

b) smooth and fast gain  decreasing in track end.

It allow to reduce clicks, that located in time area of gain changing. However, the processing is not recommended for albums like operas, live concerts and same ones. Because it can cause short pauses between songs.

Smoth DC processing may be recommended, if album tracks will played back separatelly.

Smooth DC at begin of the first album track only

If , at the first song begin may appear. It can cause pop at begin of the first track. Even in conversion. True gapless mode need for resampling of operas, live concerts and other continuous albums. In this case SmoothDC processing is not recommended for borders between songs. But SmoothDC may be applied at begin of the first song only.
